The Zoological Museum was founded in 1832 and is one of the oldest museums not only in St. Petersburg, but also in Russia as a whole. It presents a huge collection of animals from all over the globe. This is a unique place where visitors can see stuffed animals like modern birds, marine life and insects, as well as ancient species that died out several million years ago. The museum is located on Vasilievsky Island - one of the largest islands of St. Petersburg, located in the delta of the Neva River.

Zoological Museum: History

He owes his appearance to the Kunstkamera, a cabinet of rarities created by Peter I in 1714, and from which he subsequently separated. Peter I paid much attention to the collection of various collections in the Russian Empire and even issued several decrees, according to which local authorities had to deliver various natural exhibits from their homeland to St. Petersburg.

In the second half of the 19th century, the Kunstkamera collections were divided into independent museums of various profiles, and the Zoological Museum appeared on the site of the zoological collection.

At that time, the museum actively participated in scientific activities, and in 1831 it was called the Zoological Institute, and from this time its exhibition part began to be called a museum. During the Second World War, the museum did not change its location and only miraculously did not seriously suffer.

Museum exhibits: wolves

Now the exhibition has more than 30 thousand copies, among which almost all representatives of the fauna: from insects and mollusks to fish, from amphibians to birds. The richest collection of mammals is striking in its diversity. Here you can find unique exhibits of already extinct animals - a sea cow and a Tasmanian wolf. Of particular interest to visitors will be a collection of mammoths, whose age is about 40 thousand years. Using the objects exhibited as an example, you can see with your own eyes Darwin's theory of evolution.

Main expositions

Museum expositions are arranged in accordance with the zoological system and represent all groups of living creatures that live on Earth. The exhibits are located in three rooms.

The most diverse unicellular animals, protozoa, multicellular, sponges, intestinal and worms. Here is an incomplete list of invertebrates presented at the Zoological Museum. There are a lot of them. Some species were brought to the museum from the Indian Ocean and even the North Pole.

Many species have not been found in nature for a long time and therefore have great value.

The largest group of wildlife. The museum presents:

Only about 6, 5 thousand species of insects. These are representatives of all modern units and most of the genera of the world fauna.

How to get to the Zoological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The nearest metro station is Admiralteyskaya (1 kilometer), a little further Sports (one and a half kilometers) at rush hour the metro will be the fastest way to get there.

But buses and taxis stop very close to the entrance, if the weather is rainy, you will not have to go far.

If you decide to come by car, then there are two parking options for you - the first at the Kunstkamera on Customs Lane (the only one there is not a lot of parking spaces) and the second at the end of Customs Lane on Birzhevoy proezd (here you can already find a suitable parking space much more often).

Even in St. Petersburg it is convenient to use taxi applications - Uber, Gett, Yandex. Taxis and others.

We recommend visiting the no less interesting Kunstkamera Museum.

History of the Zoological Museum in St. Petersburg

The history of the museum is connected with the first museum in Russia, with the Kunstkamera, created by Peter the Great back in 1714. So the Kunstkamera gave impetus to the establishment of the Zoological Museum. Gradually, the zoological assembly became more and more isolated in the Kunstkamera. In the regulations of the Academy of Sciences of 1803, the zoological collection is mentioned as part of the “Museum of Botany, Zoology and Mineralogy”.

The foundation date of the Zoological Museum in St. Petersburg is July 4 (old style) in 1832. It was at that time that F.F. Brandt demonstrated to the Physics and Mathematics Department of the Academy of Sciences an exposition of the first three rooms, composed of surviving exhibits of the Kunstkamera.

In the mid-19th century, the collection of the Zoological Museum was not inferior to the best collections of foreign museums, and in relation to the fauna of the Palearctic, it significantly exceeded them. If in 1832 all the collections were located in only three rooms, then by the 50th anniversary of the Museum in 1882 they occupied 32 halls, in which over 40 thousand exhibits were exhibited, not counting the funds.

The museum during its existence has undergone various reorganizations. In 1891-1893, the Museum received a building on the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island (Universitetskaya Embankment, 1). In the new building, the museum was opened to visitors in 1901. At the same time, the collection was divided into stock and exhibition parts, let's not forget that there was scientific activity in it. The educational activity of the museum was one of the components of scientific progress. So the replenishment of exhibits contributed to various expeditions of Russian researchers around the world and Russia itself.

And in 1931 it was renamed the Zoological Institute and the museum began to be called the exhibition part of the institute. During the Second World War and during the blockade, the museum was in its place, he was probably lucky that he was not injured during the bombing. And in our time, the museum is replenished with new exhibits and tracks new directions in the development of science. However, probably at the present time it may not be as violent as in the old days, the general situation in the country most likely affects. Moreover, the museum is very interesting and informative.
