There are many megaliths in the Gavarres mountain range, including the so-called Catalan galarii, stone crates and corridor tombs, formed by an elongated corridor that expands when it reaches the burial chamber. Among them, it is worth noting the dolmen of La Cova d´en Daina, one of the most significant in Catalonia, which is located in the municipality of Romagna de la Selva. Dolmen La Cova d´en Daina is a Catalan gallery 7 meters long, formed by a corridor leading to the burial chamber, and a round tumulus with a diameter of 10 meters.

Historical reference

BC, these lands were inhabited by the Greeks. In official sources, Palamos was first mentioned in the 13th century. At that time it was a small fishing village with a large port. Locals mainly engaged in fishing. In the 19th century, a cork tree began to be processed here, the thickets of which surrounded Palamos. The development of the tourism industry in the city took place in the second half of the last century, after which it began to flourish. But to call this place a full-fledged resort is still impossible. Mostly couples with children come here on vacation, as well as lovers of peace and tranquility. Entertainment in Palamos for tourists is not very much.

Holiday vacation

Beach holidays are developed here. The Costa Brava region is perfect for this. The coast of the city has a well-developed infrastructure. Tourists are attracted to Palamos by the warm sea, clean fine sand and an abundance of all kinds of vegetation.

Here you can stroll along the wonderful city promenade, which is stretched along the coast. It is filled with souvenir shops, shops, cafes and bars. In the port of Palamos, there are always many yachts on the pier. Every day in the afternoon, fishermen return to it, who bring their catch to the city. In Palamos, they sell fresh fish and seafood everywhere. Sometimes this process resembles a real auction, anyone can become a participant in it.

With all its measured calmness, Palamos can also please with a certain entertainment program. The territory of the local port is equipped with all kinds of attractions that children love. Numerous diving enthusiasts come here every year. Here you can play bowling and do some shopping. Also in Palamos there are several interesting sights.

Cathedral of Santa Maria

Tourists should visit the main city temple - the Catholic Cathedral of Santa Maria, which was built in the XIV-XV centuries on the territory of the castle of San Estev. Gothic style was chosen for its design. The temple is perfectly visible from anywhere in the city. It is the “hallmark” of Palamos and has its own differences from other churches in Spain. The temple was built on a small plot of land. Its orientation along the axis is north-south. Typically, Spanish churches are being built east-west. In the 16th century, the territory of the castle was replenished with two chapels attached to the cathedral, as well as new walls and bastions, but to this day only ruins remained from them. Today in the temple you can visit the museum of religious art.

Pagan Sanctuary of Cova Dan Dan

We advise you to explore the pagan sanctuary of Cova Dan Dan, which was created during the Neolithic in the form of a burial complex. Here are granite dolmens. The sanctuary is located next to the Palamos and the small town of Romagna de la Selva. According to historians, these huge dolmens have been here for at least 4 millennia.

In the city you can see the exposition of the historical and archaeological museum of the Cau de la Costa Brava. Ancient Roman, Early Liberian and ancient Greek ceramics and other objects that archaeologists have discovered at excavations in the vicinity of Palamos are stored here.

Also, tourists should visit the Museum of Fisheries, which is not similar in the whole Mediterranean. Its exposition is dedicated only to fishing. Here you can take a tour of fishing boats and other items related to the theme of the museum, located near the local port.

Events

The city annually hosts many various festivals. Separately, it is worth mentioning about San Juan, which is held for three days in June, the religious festival-procession of the Virgen del Carmen in July, Enramada with a boat procession and a noisy winter carnival. In 1976, in the summer, the city hosted the opening of the International Music Festival, which has since been held annually. Both famous and novice musicians and singers come to him.
